Several of the city's beaches, including Ipanema, Arpoador and Leblon, have a world-class surf with waves suitable for absolute beginners, pros and everyone in between. Along the Rio coastline, you will find many a surfing school, able to teach you the basics of surfing.
The beaches in the city are always filled with people sunbathing, swimming and surfing, particularly on the weekends, so if you're more comfortable surfing when it's quieter, try it on a weekday. Arpoador Beach, incidentally, also offers the opportunity to surf at nighthere are lights set up along the rocks.
